Abstract

[This is an excerpt.] In the past few years, amid a pandemic that has taken a disproportionate toll on Black and brown people and a national reckoning on racial justice, leaders from several U.S. health systems have named racism as a public health threat and pledged to identify and reverse racist policies and practices in their institutions. As an example, in an open letter published last Juneteenth, leaders from 36 Chicago hospitals said it’s “time for action” and promised to “double down” on efforts to reduce racial health disparities among their patients, create more equitable workplaces for their employees, and invest in communities of color where many of their patients and staff live.
